SEMINAR: Translating optical imaging methods for intra-operative surgical guidance in endocrine surgery
Currently about 10:1 women and 3:1 men have some form of thyroid disorder, which when not controlled by medications, is treated with thyroid surgeries that is one of the safest surgical procedures. However, it necessitates careful dissection of the thyroid while avoiding injury of vital structures such as the parathyroid and its vasculature. Accidental excision or damage to the parathyroid or its vasculature could lead to transient or permanent hypocalcemia. Until recently, surgeons identify parathyroid and confirm its viability using visual examination which is highly subjective. We have demonstrated that near infra-red autofluorescence (NIRAF) of the parathyroid can be used for its real-time identification and laser speckle contract imaging can be used to identify its viability. Here, I will present the translation of these technologies into clinical practice and the extension of its use for other endocrine surgeries.
