Photonics for Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis powers nearly all life on earth. Light drives photosynthesis. Chlorophylls are the major group of light harvesting pigments. In plants they are bound to a protein scaffold. Several proteins together form a photosystem. Each photosystem has about 200 chlorophylls and one reaction centre. In the reaction centre the excitation energy is used for charge separation occurs, as such transforming the light energy into chemical energy. A fraction of the excitation energy is lost as fluorescence. As such plants do not only absorb photons, they also emit light. In this talk I will show how picosecond time-resolved fluorescence and fluorescence lifetime imaging can be used to study the photosynthetic machinery at work.
