Making the Molecular Movie: Watching a Phase Transition at the Atomic Scale

Watching processes like a phase transformation or phase transition at the atomic scale as it happens is a key goal in condensed matter physics. However, tracking the motion of 1023 atoms on femtosecond timescales can be challenging! In this work lecture, I will give a summary to our work on using ultrafast total X-ray scattering to track the atomic trajectories of a light-induced insulator-metal phase transition. I will show how entropy and disorder build up in the lattice and how it is measured on the ultrafast timescale.
