Diffuse optical imaging of tissue can be used to characterize molecular features of tissue for the detection, diagnosis, and/or management of cancer therapy. We will review the development of this technique and outline some of the applications in medical imaging. Current developments in technical and computational approaches for breast cancer imaging as well as functional imaging of the human brain will be presented.
