Optical gratings for free space waves have been around for very long. At the beginning of the integrated optics era, gratings have been considered as a means to couple light into waveguides. This move towards guided waves has ironically revealed resonance effects which present a great interest for ... free space waves. The presentation will describe the main resonance effects which the association between a corrugation (or index modulation) and a field reservoir gives rise to, and give a number of applications with experimental results confirming the selectivity of such phenomena and the impressive diffraction efficiency that they permit to achieve.
