SEMINAR: Controlling the Motion of a Levitated Object in the Quantum Regime

MASSIMILIANO ROSSI
TU Delft

The theory of quantum mechanics predicts bizarre phenomena, that defy common sense. Its only mystery, according to Richard Feynman, lies in the double-slit experiment.Nowadays, we have experimented the interference of matter waves with several microscopic systems. However, extending these experiments to macroscopic object remains an exceptionally daunting task. In this talk, I will present some recent progress towards this long-standing goal. We levitate a piece of solid and control its motion at the level of single quanta. Furthermore, by controlling the potential landscape, we delocalize the motion of such an object to a length greater than the zero-point fluctuations. I will give an overview of the next steps and future challenges.
