Quantum Non-Linear Optics at the single photon level with Cold Rydberg Atoms
Part of the experimental setup to create Rydberg atoms
We investigate experimentally the creation, control, interaction and detection of single collective Rydberg excitations (so-called Rydberg polaritons) in a gas of laser cooled atoms.
Rydberg atoms (atoms excited in states with high quantum number) exhibit huge dipole moments that allow strong interaction between atoms over a distance several orders of magnitude larger than normal atoms. This leads to giant non-linearities that can be used to perform quantum non-linear experiments in the single photon regime.
