Teaming up with Universities and Institutions in the Barcelona area, as well as from other European countries, ICFO offers MASTER STUDIES in optics and photonic related areas. ICFO's Group Leaders offer a variety of courses in these Masters and opportunities to their students to accomplish the compulsory Master Thesis at ICFO.

  • Master in Photonics

Three Universities based in the Barcelona metropolitan area (the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Universitat de Barcelona) and ICFO team up to offer a comprehensive Master in PHOTONICS. The Master aims at educating future researchers and talented technology specialists, and at promoting entrepreneurial activity amongst students.

ICFO's group leaders offer a variety of courses in this Master in a number of advanced topics in Photonics, including Optical Techniques in Biology, Applied Nonlinear Optics, Optoelectronics, Laser Spectroscopy, Nanophotonics, Quantum Optics, Quantum Information Technologies, and Ultrafast Optics, among others. The course offers a fundamental background as well as a glance at the very latest advances in the corresponding topics.

ICFO also offers a number of opportunities to complete the compulsory Master Thesis, as well as different possibilities to start conducting research at ICFO in the projects undertaken by the ICFO groups. For detailed information about the MSc in Photonics, visit

ICFO, in collaboration with other European institutions, is offering an Erasmus Mundus Master Course (EMMC) EUROPHOTONICS in Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics.

ERASMUS MUNDUS is a cooperation and mobility program in the field of higher education, implemented by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and managed by the European Commission.

The EUROPHOTONICS EMMC offers an extensive two-year Master level program focusing on advanced research and applied topics in frontier research in the field of Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics, with interdisciplinary applications. Master students who take part in this program are given the opportunity to work on today's new challenges within an academic or applied research career. Research in these fields endeavors to understand and control matter and optical phenomena at the ultimate nanometric scale, provide new imaging and monitoring tools for the most complex biological processes from cells and tissues to clinical applications, and devise new and original tools for future optical devices.

There are scholarships available for deserving students who are interested in joining this Master Program. Description, conditions and information on how to apply can be found in the dedicated webpage of the program.

  • Master in PhotoMedicine

ICFO collaborates with Quiron-Teknon Hospital in the Master in Photomedicine, offered at the Centre Específic per a la Millora i Innovació de les Empreses at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalonia (UPC). The objective of this program is to bring together technical and medical components of photonic technologies with their diagnostic and therapeutic uses. The program allows medical doctors to embrace the fundamentals of the physics behind different light based technologies as well as to develop competencies in the use of these technologies.
