New ICFOnians

Forty-two ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the months of September and October. Welcome aboard!

Nine Postdoctoral researchers, twelve PhD students, eight students, six visiting PhD students, three visiting students, one KTT Project Manager and three new members of management.

Guillermo Martínez-Denegri Sánchez recently defended his PhD at ICFO within the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof Dr Jordi Martorell, and will continue his research within the group as a Postdoctoral researcher.

Samyobrata Mukherjee recently defended his PhD at ICFO within the Nonlinear Optical Phenomena research group led by UPC Prof Dr Lluís Torner, and will continue his research within the group as a Postdoctoral researcher.

Malak El-Quessny, who holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of California, joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by Prof Dr Michael Krieg. He will be focusing his research on the study of the establishment of organoid culture, mechanical stimulation and transcriptomic profileunder stress.

Carmen Martínez received her PhD in Biomedicine from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by Prof Dr Michael Krieg. She will use genetic tools to dissect the role of mechanical stress in neurodegenerative diseases. She will work with engineers and physicists in the lab to apply continuous mechanical stress to C elegans and observe their behavioral decline.

Debranjan Mandal, holds a PhD in Physical and Materials Chemistry Division at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory Pune, in India. He joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Gerasimos Konstantatos. He will be focusing his research on colloidal quantum dot optoelectronics and solar cells.

Hyun Soo Ra received his PhD in Energy Science and Engineering, from DGIST, in Korea, joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Gerasimos Konstantatos. He will work on the development of infrared photodetectors comprising 2D materials and MWIR absorbing quantum dots as sensitizers with intraband transitions.

Katerina Nikolidau, who holds a PhD in Physics from the University of California, joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Gerasimos Konstantatos. She will be focusing her research on Infrared colloidal quantum dot optoelectronics.

Mariano Pascale received his PhD in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering from the Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II. He joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Thermal Photonics research group led by Prof Dr Georgia Papadakis. He will focus his research on analytical and numerical work on near-field and far-field thermal emission and radiative heat transfer with focus on anisotropic 2D materials.

Paolo Stornati, who holds a PhD in Particle Physics from DESY Zeuthen, in Berlin, joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein.

Aditya Malla, holds an International Erasmus Mundus MSc in Photonics (Europhotonics) from the Aix-Marseille Université and the Karlsruhe Institute of Tecnhology. He joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof Gerasimos Konstantatos. He will focus his research on CQD Infrared Light emitters.

Riccardo Bertini, who holds a MSc in Physics from the University of Pisa, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Nano-Optoelectronics research group led ICREA Prof Dr Frank. He will be focusing his work on Infrared+THz optics with 2D-material heterostructures.

Marta Cagetti, who holds a MsC in Physics from the University of Pisa, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Quantum Nano Mechanics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Adrian Bachtold. He will focus his research on electromechanical resonators based on nanotubes for quantum simulations and quantumbits.

Iliyan Karadzhov, holds a MSc in Photonics from the Abbe School of Photonics, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena, Germany. He joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Optoelectronics research group led ICREA Prof Dr Valerio Pruneri. He will be focusing his research on work on ultrathin materials for surface optics.

Julita Poborska, who holds a MSc in Technical Physics from the Lodz University of Tecnhology, Poland, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof Jens Biegert. She will focus her research on extreme mid-IR photonics.

Tomáš Lamich, who holds a MSc in Optics and Optoelectronics from the Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led ICREA Prof Dr Morgan Mitchell. He will work on quantum optics with single atoms.

Javier Arrés Chillón, who holds a MSc in Photonics from the UPC, joined ICFO as a Research Engineer in the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Valerio Pruneri. He will continue his research within the group as a PhD student.

Santiago Ortiz, who holds a MSc in Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences from UPF, joined ICFO as a student in the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by Prof Dr Michael Krieg. He will continue his research within the group as a PhD student.

Saad Abdullah, who holds a MSc in Photonics from the UPC, joined ICFO as a student in the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Javier García de Abajo. He will continue his research within the group as a PhD student.

Pavel Popov, who holds a MSc in Physics from Ruprecht-Karls Universität in Heidelberg, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Quantum Optics Theory research group led ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein.

Anubhav Srivastava, holds a MSc in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. He joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein. He will focus his research on CQD Infrared Light emitters.

María Hernández Ruiz, who holds a MSc in Optical Fiber and Photonic Engineering from the University of Southampton, UK, joins ICFO as a PhD student in the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led ICREA Prof Dr Morgan Mitchell. She will be focusing her work on quantum sensing with atomic vapor devices.

Pedro Cruz, who is pursuing a PhD at the University of Porto, joins ICFO as a Visiting PhD student in the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Antonio Acín. His work will focus on Quantum devices and machine learning.

Martin Hörmann, who is pursuing a PhD at Politecnico di Milano, joins ICFO as a Visiting PhD student in the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Niek van Hulst. His work will focus on Multiphoton Microscopy and Ultrafast Spectroscopy.

Abigail Stein, who holds a BS in Physics and Electrical Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, joins ICFO as a visiting PhD student in the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Valerio Pruneri. She will be focusing her research on quantum communication in space.

Aleksander Wozniak, who is pursuing a PhD at the Quantum Chemistry Laboratory from the University of Warsaw, joins ICFO as a Visiting PhD student in the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein.

Eva González Ruiz, who is pursuing a PhD at Niels Bohr Institute, joins ICFO as a Visiting PhD student in the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Antonio Acín. His work will focus on experimental challenges of Bell tests and quantum metrology.

Shubhayan Sarkar, who is pursuing a PhD at the Center for Theoretical Physics, Poland, joins ICFO as a Visiting PhD student in the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Antonio Acín. His work will focus on the study of quantum correlations and device-independent quantum information protocols.

Ravindra Chhajlany, who holds a PhD in Physics and is now a researcher at the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist.

Seham Kamal, who is a professor at the Physics Department of Cairo University, joins the Organic Nanostructures Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof Dr Jordi Martorell as a visiting scientist within the program ‘Ellas investigan’ from the Fundación Mujeres por África.

Marcin Plodzien, who holds a PhD in Physics from Jagiellonian University and is now a researcher at the International Research Centre Magtop – Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist to work on joint projects ion quantum simulators and quantum information science.

Hanna Salamon, who is working towards a MSc in Nanoscience from the University of Copenhagen, joins ICFO as a student in the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Hugues de Riedmatten.

Pontus Walan, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics at the Lund University, joins ICFO as a student in the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Niek van Hulst.

Edvin Sandén, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Physics at the Lund University, joins ICFO as a student in the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Niek van Hulst.

Teodor Parella , who is working towards a BSc in Physics and Chemistry at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, has joined ICFO as a student in the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Antonio Acín.

Carolina Fajardo Vega, who is pursuing a MSc in Photonics from the UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, joins ICFO as a student in the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Turgut Durduran.

Manel Madrid Valero , who is working towards a BSc in Chemistry at the Universitat de Barcelona, has joined ICFO as a student in the Super-resolution Light Microscopy and Nanoscopy Lab group led by Dr Pablo Loza.

Tim Broekema , who is pursuing a MSc in Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology, has joined ICFO as a student in the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Gerasimos Konstantatos.

Joel Compte Prades, who is working towards an Engineering degree in Telecommunications at UPC, has joined ICFO as a student in the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof Dr Antonio Acín.

Luis Guillermo Gerling Sarabia , who holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering – Photovoltaics from UPC, is joining the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Unit at ICFO as a Project Manager of the portfolio of energy and nanomaterials.

Elena Nolla , joins the Human Resources and Education Unit as a Human Resources Officer.

Joana Ibañez Solé , joins the Projects unit at ICFO to work as project manager of the Quantum Flagship.

Jordi Cortes Picas , joins the Corporate Communication unit at ICFO to work on the Communication for European Projects.
