Photonic Contest on Poetry&Science

As part of the celebration of its tenth anniversary, ICFO organizes a literary contest for high-schoolers with a very special prize.

February 16, 2012
“Light on the waves” (La llum a les ones) is a literary contest for high-schoolers, recently launched by ICFO to promote the interplay of science, poetry and music. Students are invited to participate by submitting a poem or short text of scientific fiction inspired by light. Each of the nine winning texts will be converted into the lyrics of a song composed by an emergent musical group around Catalonia.

Once all nine songs have been composed, there will be a live performance in La Pedrera de Barcelona, hosted by CatalunyaCaixa-Obra Social.

The idea is to create a nice environment where students, musicians, and poets can meet and talk about science (and photons). Scientific fiction allows the students to freely create stories or poems with their own rules, but rules that once created are unbreakable and give rise, if wisely followed, to a whole consistent world of wonder! We really hope to have a lot of fun!

We are grateful for the collaboration and support of: CatalunyaCaixa-Obra Social for helping to launch the project; iCAt FM radio station, who help in the diffusion of the initiative –especially in gathering the musicias; and Arts Santa Mònica -a center of reference in Catalonia for the interplay of science, art and thinking- for a guidance which guarantees the quality of the program.
