QEOD Thesis Prize for Applied Aspects
The European Physical Society recognizes Achim Woessner for excellent PhD research and scientific communication

Since 2007, the Quantum Electronics and Optics division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS) awards up to four Thesis prizes around the CLEO Europe Conference to reward excellence in PhD research and scientific communication in the area of quantum electronics and optics. The prizes take into account related PhD thesis work submitted in the two years prior to the conference. These Prizes are awarded for fundamental and applied aspects.
The 2017 QEOD Thesis prize for applied aspects is awarded to Dr. Achim Woessner, whose work was supervised by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. His thesis entitled “Exploring Flatland Nano-Optics with Graphene Plasmons” dealt with graphene plasmons which were detected electrically and used to build ultra-compact modulators, for the first time enabling applications in biosensing and mid-infrared integrated optics.
Achim Woessner is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Koppens group at ICFO. His research interests include graphene plasmonics and optoelectronics. He obtained his Master in Photonics from the joined European Europhotonics program and his Bachelor from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
