5th Edition of Llum a les Ones
CCCB hosts winners, musicians and researchers for Final Concert
October 01, 2018
On September 28th, European Researchers’ Night, science, music and literature met at the CCCB for the Grand Finale of the 5th edition of the unique Llum a les Ones ’18 (Light on the Waves) contest.
“Llum a les Ones”, a science fiction writing contest launched by ICFO’s Outreach team in 2012, aims to bring photonics closer to society by motivating high school students and the general public to write short stories or poems about light.
This year’s edition, organized in collaboration with CCCB Educación and the Magazine Principia, encouraged participants to write about climate change, to imagine an alternative world (past, future, or extra-terrestrial), with a peculiar climatic scenario (Utopian, Dystopian or Arcadian) that has been conditioned by civilization. A prestigious jury comprised by Miquel Barceló, Sonia Fernandez Vidal, Xavier Duran, and Toni Pou selected the winning texts from more than 75 short stories and poems submitted to the contest.
The winning texts were performed as lyrics to songs that were composed by local musicians. During the final event, a full auditorium enjoyed a live performance of the songs inspired by the winning texts, alternated with short talks about different aspects of climate change given by researchers from many Catalan research centers.
The winning stories of the 2018 edition within the three different categories were the following:
