La Marató de TV3 2018 funds research on cancer
Researchers at ICFO and Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute to work together to fight breast cancer
The Fundació La Marató de TV3 runs an annual telethon to raise funds for biomedical research of excellence into diseases that are currently incurable. In addition, La Marató raises social awareness about the diseases dealt with in the telethon by means of campaigns involving the public and through publicity and educational events.
In the 2018 Marató, which dealt with cancer, 192 projects were presented and assessed according to their quality, methodology and relevance by 149 scientists specialising in this disease. In accordance with the proposal of the scientific Advisory Committee of the Fundació La Marató de TV3 2018, in a formal ceremony on 30 October, the Board announced the distribution of €13,149,870.76 to 96 research teams working on 43 research projects of excellence. A project submitted by Dr. Monica Marro, a researcher in the ICFO SLN facility led by Prof. Pablo Loza, and Dr Pedro Luis Fernández Ruiz, Head of the Pathological Anatomy Service at the Germans Trias Hospital, received funding to study the molecular profiles and integrated microspectroscopics of breast carcinoma and its resistance to neoadjuvant therapy.
Recipients of funding from the 2018 edition of the La Marató de TV3 will have three years to pursue their projects to find more responses to cancer. Despite the many advances in recent years, one of every two men and one in every three women will have a cancer at some point in their lives.
The 2019 edition of La Marató de TV3 will raise money to fund research into rare diseases.
