The easy to process, flexibility, lightness and low cost of semiconducting polymers are all extremely attractive traits for competitive alternatives to current renewable energy technologies. Indeed, our group is driven by the ambition to use scientific knowledge to develop photovoltaic and thermoelectric technologies based on this new generation of plastics.
In this talk, I will focus on some of our recent progress in the field of plastic solar cells. In particular, I will describe the use of advanced spectroscopic techniques to help unravelling the structure-performance nexus for this type of materials. This knowledge enabled us the development of new processing tools to fabricate photovoltaic devices with improved efficiencies or functionalities. Finally, some of the critical aspects towards industrialization will be briefly discussed, such as the development of green solvents or ITO-free cells
