ICFOnians for Women in Science Month
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee organizes activities throughout the year to stimulate conversations and gain visibility for important issues that have been identified in our community for their importance and for their potential for improvement and growth. The historical disparity in the representation of women and men in our field of science, most notable when comparing positions of leadership, motivated the committee to initiate the annual celebration of ICFOnians Women in Science Month at ICFO in 2018.
This month long initiative begins on February 11th, International Day of Women and Girls in Science and extends all the way to March 8th, International Women’s Day, during which time ICFOnians organize a range of discussions and activities aimed at supporting women in and around science and helping to ensure a positive future for women in science that we all hope to be part of. It is an important part of the institute’s Diversity and Inclusion program.
Recognizing that there are women working in many fields, directly and indirectly involved in the scientific enterprise, each playing a role in facilitating frontier research advances, this year’s WiS month agenda purposely aims at representing a wide range of voices and perspectives of women working in STEM related fields.

Feb 11, 17h Blue Lecture Room | Wikimarathon for Women in Science Month On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ICFO joins the PRBB edit-a-thon to work together to increase the visibility of women in science on Wikipedia. |
Feb 19, 16.30h Elements Room | 'How to make Women in Science events more inclusive? A conversation.' A conversation with Dr. Helena García-Cebollada on how to improve the inclusivity of Women in Science events. Join the conversation in a save and relaxed environment, together with Helena's help we will comment on good practices and how to make sure we host events where no-one is left behind |
Feb 25, 13h Blue Lecture Room | Pizza and Documentary: ‘Coded Bias’ MIT media researcher Joy Buolamwini’s computer science studies uncovered that her face was unrecognizable in many facial recognition systems and she worked to find out why these systems failed. She later found that facial recognition programs only worked when she wore a white mask. She goes on to find out about how else artificial technology can affect minorities. |
March 5, 16h Cafè de la Llum | Book Club: "Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed For Men" by Caroline Criado-Perez Imagine a world where your phone is too big for your hand, where your doctor prescribes a drug that is wrong for your body, where in a car accident you are 47% more likely to be seriously injured, where every week the countless hours of work you do are not recognised or valued. If any of this sounds familiar, chances are that you’re a woman. Caroline Criado-Perez OBE is a British feminist author, journalist and activist. Her first national campaign, the Women's Room project, aimed to increase the presence of female experts in the media. |
Feb 11 – March 13 NEST Hall | Women In Science We Admire Campaign 2025 Women are still under-represented in most areas of science, however through this campaign, we aim to highlight women who are making an important mark on the scientific enterprise through their work and in so doing, are helping to expand the presence of women leaders in science. All ICFOnians are encouraged to nominate a female scientist that has inspired you and/or who you believe has had a significant impact on science through her discoveries, enthusiasm, advocacy, and/or leadership. www.womeninscienceweadmire.icfo.eu |
| OUTREACH | FOCUS ON THE FUTURE: In honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ICFOnians will participate in different Outreach activities both in person and online that aim to give girls and young women positive female role-models in science |
| Feb 11 | Científiques This program co-organized every year by Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca I la Innovació and BIST mobilizes over 700 women scientists, from the public and private sectors who will give talks - face-to-face or online - at 800+ schools and institutes throughout Catalonia. This year 10 ICFOnians from different groups and units across ICFO are participating. |
| Feb 11 | Photonics in 5minutes An Outreach activity for students between 9th and 12th grade where students get to immerse themselves in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO women scientists. In 5 minutes, they will share in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and society in general. |
