Graphene Flagship

In a press conference today, the European Commission announced the two finalists of the FET Flagship program. “Graphene” and “The Human Brain” were named as the recipients of the largest research cash award in European history, Europe’s first 10- year, €1.000 million FET Flagships. These flagships, which will become large band European projects, were chosen from a shortlist of six by a panel of experts including leading scientists, professors, Nobel Prize winners, and industrialists. As per European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes, the flagship program aims to give European R&D a major push “back into the driver’s seat” in order to “fertilize the green shoots of economic growth”.

The mission of the Graphene flagship is to take graphene and related layered materials from academic laboratories to society, revolutionize multiple industries and create economic growth and new jobs in Europe. Graphene’s unique combination of superior properties makes it a credible starting point for new disruptive technologies in a wide range of fields.

Research work is divided into 11 scientific and technological work packages, each managed by a work package leader and deputy. ICFO Professor Frank Koppens will play a leading role as deputy of the Optoelectonics work package.
